on a stroll through my city's fancy fancy fancy shops i discovered the perfumes and candles by the swedish brand byredo and was blown away from the beginning: the fragrances smell fantastic, the bottles look beautiful and the designer seems to be a mysterious, marvelous man. unfortunately, i cannot afford to get gypsy water, sunday cologne or loveless (aren't these names so cool?!) in my life.

last weekend was the 3 year anniversary of glory days at the biltmore cabaret --- when i first visited vancouver in 2009 that was the coolest thing in the world to me and i went every week. but in the one year i have been living in town now, i never went, so last saturday, it just had to happen.

unfortunately, the event collided with some heartache, a bottle of wine and tears, but all this could not keep me from dancing with my girls. thanks for taking care of me, all you lovely ladies.

my body is my temple, so i swear by natural skin and hair care. over the last years i tried to replace a lot of the standard products by standard (cheap, available, advertised) brands i had always used with more natural alternatives - just to find out, how even more available and cheaper most of them are (but i still admire the ads where the models and actresses just look so divine, thanks photoshop, but i can still appreciate it).

oliv naturell face scrub, eye cream and hair balsam. one word: moisturising.

sukin organics australian natural skincare facial moisturiser, foaming facial cleanser (not in my pic) and hydrating mist toner. amazing stuff, that leaves nothing but perfect skin behind. no tension, no oily shine, no redness. and the smell is so wonderful, i am a fan.

aubrey organics detangler and shine booster. helps me to brush through my long hair every night before i got to sleep. and i am happy about it every single time.

alright, here is my tiny little herb-vegetable-flower garden.
and here is the information, that besides those products mentioned above i use tons of oils: olive oil for the tips if my hair and for taking off eye make up (look, it is a tip from michelle phan!), almond oil for rough skin and vanilla oil all over my body, just to smell sexy. also: sea salt as an exfoliator for my body and herbs and spices as bath ingredients. tada.
i already shared some hair colouring secrets here. additionally i can tell you: i just wash my hair once a week, comb it carefully when it´s wet, brush it 100 times every night before bed, massage my scalp with a head massager to stimulate growth and never blow dry it. that´s it. this way, it gives me a lot of female superpowers, weeeeeee!

transitions from summer to autumn, two days ago at night i smelled the first cold night air and saw a leaf fall in the morning. transforming from an 8 to 4 office worker into a full-time student again, my watch shows new times and reminds me of old worries and duties. wearing warm tops but still sporting bottoms that let my legs breathe.

all in all: taking the feeling of bittersweetness to the heart and practice it with my hands!
i am so very thankful for my life and every little thing in it. it seems like everything falls together this fall and makes sense.

i constantly wonder if i worked hard enough to deserve this easiest of lives?

every day on my way to work (and back of course), i pass the international ice cream factory casa gelato.

that means drooling and wondering what is happening in that bright pink building for a long time.

so one of these hot summer days i took two favourite people and we did it! together with about 20 families with kids we lined up at the long (and even more pink) counters and tried the most peculiar savoury flavours: garlic, peanut butter, goat cheese-pear-oregano or cashew, apple-cheddar, sour soup and the weirdest one, CURRY.

but after all, we ended up going for supersweet tastes like fig-almond, m&m, honeydew melon and cinnamon.

my room at my parent´s house, where i lived for about 10 years - ten important, intense years of my life, a lot of them as a teenager...that room changed and what you see here is how i left it when i moved on to a bigger town, another country, a new life. some details that i always sported in my room are: real trees and branches spraypainted white or black and covered with glitter, black and white accessoires, bones and shells and feathers, an altar, shining stars, natural wood floor and walls and blue colours surrounding it all. i love(d) my room to look like it is a little world of its own, like a tiny bubble of the outside world but placed in a house.

unfortunately i never documented the changes of my room through the years, because i was so bound up in the here and now of teenage living. oh sigh.

oh yes, we also went to the legendary cobalt motor hotel on main str. where we danced with each other and teenagers.

and hell yeah, despite all the hotel hopping i felt wonderfully at home!

my summer vacations are over, my parents left me to go home again and the sun and moon hide behind clouds today. it is times like these when i am sad, scared and worried, that i feel like this photo perfectly pictures my dark sides. it was taken by a fantastic photo team: reinhard block and günna sohn.

the dress was from the beginning of the 1900´s, just like the location of this photoshoot, an old mansion by a lake in south germany. it was very easy for me to feel the feelings these old things might have experienced, and see, hear and smell what was going on such a long time ago. the penultimate turn of the centuries has always been my favourite decade.

i went to a fashion-art event in vancouver, that i loved: GET RAW at one of the best vintage stores on main street f as in frank.

about fifty local artists were asked to design a denim jacket and they came up with everything possible from destruction to decoration. the pieces were then presented in the shop, with a dj playing old school rap (i could really tell it was old school because my mom who i took with me knew all the songs, the old disco chick!) and a bar with cheap drinks. how awesome. also, the jackets were auctioned and all the proceeds went to charities like the portland hotel society.

with cher and the sundowners. my heroes of heartbreak!

getting older shows me more and more how flexible my heart and mind have become over the years. no more teenage heartbreak, i rather feel amazed and fascinated about how quickly i can change from being a part of a couple to being a singlewoman again. and my sadness results more from the surprise about how fast and easy somebody can disappear from my life, who has been the most important person just a few weeks before NOW.

i will always remember the bright neon orange-white-silver cake my american aunt made me for my sweet sixteen birthday. and ever since i know that whatever colour, the cakes just taste the same: sweeeeeet!

recently i discussed food colours with friends and we realized: except blueberries, there is no blue food really!

and the first thing coming up when googling blue food was blue velvet cake. i made it with white angle cakemix and blue food colour.

to add some natural blue and real flavour, i added organic blueberries. there you go!

my two purses. yes, two. plus, mixing fashion and nature here, check it out.

after years of carrying around new cheap stylish bags that die shortly after the extreme use i put them through, i settled for quality and hope those will be my partners in everyday-work-study-errands-crime for a longer time.

vintage orange-brown leather bag, that used to be a gentleman clutch (my grandfather stored his pistol and munition in it!), before i added a wool strap and stitched a leaf on it myself. this is what i go out with, fancy style, goes with my hair oh-so-well. and with this sunset at deer lake, right?

used pendleton dopp bag i finally found on ebay after months of looking for it (colour, leather strap). it is made of navajo wool, is so pretty and sturdy and can handle all the random stuff i bring with me while at the same time preventing me from bringing too much stuff. for example on a little hiking trip to capilano lake, like you see here.

now i feel like doing a "what's in my bag" post, a video actually. it is a classic, a new classic, and i love classic things. they are like prototypes and stereotypes. and isn't it kind of fascinating, that after a few years of fashion blogging and vlogging there are already some standards and stuff that everybody just does?

another escape from the town led me to white rock...on a very stormy wild sunday...walking along the promenade and trying to walk on the pier, the wind was everywhere...so, is there anything better than a warm soup and a sweet treat? no. thought-said-done, i went to tracycakes bakery café!

ususally i would have tried a cupcake, because i love them and because they are tracycakes specialty of course. but the weather even influenced my foodcravings, so the homemade minestrone, raw sallad and creamcheese sandwich made it on the table.

still, the turtle cheesecake for dessert totally convinced me of the staff´s sweet baking abilities - approved. and: there even is a cupcake called melly which they unfortunately did not have freshly made on that sunday, but next time i am there, i will definitely taste it - because it has my name, hihi.

wait a minute. or three. and have a look at this, since i am sooo proud of it. this was indeed not my first DIY project, but my most efficient/effective so far and therefore a very valuable one.

i got this dress at h&m on sale for15$ (reduced from around 70$), and it must have been a part of an older recycled polyester collection, which is a part of their general recycling efforts. their newest project is the the conscious collection, that just launched in the stores two weeks ago - i will check that out soon, but for now, i am still indulging in my triple-recycling-coup.

i made three pieces from this wonderful light pink dress: a tulle ballet skirt (i added some tea-stained elastic), a cropped bustier (i cut off the basic fabric so only the light tulle is left to cover a lightly tanned summer stomach) and a headband with flowers (i just sew the ends of the former shoulder strap together).

et voila. soon, i will incorporate each of these in outfits and showyall!ha!

i am once again amazed by this photoblog and its visual powers. the topics and pictures change every few weeks or so, and show everything from beautiful girls to gnarly bikers. this time: it is war.

scrolling scrolling scrolling through the four pages of images from the almost ancient looking american civil war to modern military fights, i, as a horse lover cannot ignore the fact that horses were used and abused in all wars of man. soldiers, indian tribe leaders, guerilla terrorists - from the early days in the new world to just yesterday in the centre of our so called old world, men relied on their equus partner, who often became a friend when fighting an enemy.

another thing i notice is how disturbingly beautiful death and destruction can look, and lastly, how the simple presence of animals, women/females and children in those war pictures create softness and makes aware of how ridiculous the men/males seem in their stupid displays of power.

war has to be. humans are fighters by nature.

sushi, sushi, sushi. ever since i learned that there is a vegetarian version, i was interested. and now that i live in the heavily -and heavenly- asian influenced food culture of vancouver, i am obsessed. i crave and get sushi at least once a week. sushi sunday has almost become a staple and the number of my local beloved sushi place tentatsu is in my phonebook.

oh does is not look pretty. sigh.

these boots are made for living

1. dark blue flat rubber rain booties with buttons (thrift store linköping). waterproof shoes are a standard in our lovely rain city, you see them on everyone's feet, but usually knee-high, black and from a very certain brand that i cannot afford. but i am actually happy to stand out a bit with my vintage shoes.

2. black pleather laced combat boots with rubber sole and high high high chunky heels (skopunkten stockholm). they remind me of kesha's song "boots and boys", and rihanna's lyrics "feeling so good, looking so bad", so you can guess that i love going out to party and dance with them. in my mind, they kind of combine the spirits of my dad (soldier) and my mom (disco queen).

3. orange-brown leather kicking boots with light stitchery and medium chunky heels (thrift store vancouver). they resemble my hair colour like no other piece of clothing i own plus they are pretty comfortable, so i could wear them every day, which i do basically.

oh how they all fit to the still life of native pattern cushions on my couch and the green grass in the backyard.
and of course they all go perfectly with my white angora-wool miniskirt and black urban outfitters tights.eek.

everything i see, from big things like beautiful landscapes and cityskylines or breathtaking men, women and their style, to smaller stuff like pretty little glitter things and photography or everyday experiences like a funny graffiti on my way to work or the crowd at a cool concert.

i often feel like this is my strongest sense, the most important way to live in this world, and also, i take my camera with me almost everywhere, but not deep in the bag, but right at hand in my pocket.

ears:

everything i hear, my favourite all-time-classics, current hits i play obesessively on repeat for hours, songs that make me dance, sleep, laugh and cry or inspire me to singalong or shutthefuckup, musicians that inspire me with their lyrics, looks or all-embracing art.

same here, it always seems so impossible to live without music, and it is such an important part of my life, that i wanna call this my favourite of all our senses.

mouth:

everything i eat and drink, that tastes so good and looks so delicious, nourishes and heals me, challenges my cooking skills, lets me enjoy restaurants and co, in a word: everything that keeps me alive.

how to argue about the importance of the sense of taste?

skin:

everything i feel and wear, the clothes and their history, outfits and inspiring styles i discover in the endless world of the internet as well as in the streets of this city - what to put on and into your skin in the form of leather, feather, lotions and potions, ha!

heart:

it makes me feel. it is personal. it has soul, too.

brain:

think and read and think and watch and think and say and think and hear and think.

this is how i feel about douglas coupland - my first (and now favourite) canadian author.

fun fact: peppered with the smiths song lyrics, stumbling upon them gives you the friendly feeling of being a music person - perfect.

soundtrack for reading: well guess what...

on a personal note: i found this novel in the canadia shelf in a second hand bookstore and picked it up because i was curious about literature from my new home country and especially about this beautiful title. during my first month of living here i slept in a teeny room without windows but wallpapers made of maps of the city. this way i could easily look up every street, shop or school in north vancouver that coupland mentions in his story. and oh what a story: so happening, so alive, so close to life. now, i see all the bums, homeless and druggies in the neighbourhood with different eyes: maybe they have been to the future and have no ways to tell their story properly. they should refer to this novel.

fun fact: product obsession, a lot to discover when it comes to hair and food (cat food!).

favourite sentence: "i love strangers."

soundtrack for reading: what was considered indie and alternative in the nineties...

on a personal note: this novel i found in the little library that my landlord left behind in the apartment and started reading it because i liked my first coupland so much. to be honest i was a little bit disappoined (due to the massive liking of giac), but still consider it a cool book. there are roadtrips, rebellious redheads and hairy hippies, consumer criticism, a lot of hating on france and a dirty cheap los angeles apartment. i recommend it as a bedside book when you spend the first time in your new place and have to get used to sleeping in a what used to be a stranger´s room before.

fun fact: another music reference! there is a cute little episode in the book about the title and the beatles, check it out.

favourite sentence: "i once read that for every person currently alive on earth, there are nineteen dead people who have lived before."

soundtrack for reading: anything played backwards...

on a personal note: the third novel was a present from my landlady, the generous woman. i remember saying out loud how much i like this book already after reading the first few pages. so i took this book with me into my life, on the bus, in the office, at the waterside. just like coupland´s other works, this is about how times and places clash, for example the seventies and 2004 or old europe and brandnew vancouver. past, present and future are seen as dangers and hopes alike. read it if you want strong opinions about passports, vienna or the different levels of consciousness. the big topic is actually loneliness and is linked with big city anonymity, daily grind and family affairs. now imagine that.

sorry for the lack of blogposts, but i had a reason: i have an office job for a few weeks now, that keeps me busy 10h each weekday, and at the weekends i try to escape the city and the computer...but at least i work at a pretty picturesque place, in YALETOWN, the coolest part of downtown vancouver. close to the water, filling over with asian restaurants as well as candy stores and super busy busy busy.

each break i take on the office´s balcony for fresh air leaves me breatheless - how ironic. so i just enqueue with all the business women running wild between pre-work yoga or pilates and after-work cocktails, seriously using cosmopolitan´s tipps for office girls, feeling so carry/miranda/charlotte/samantha when walking downtown streets, having lunch-meetings and then either shop or drop right after closing time.

after giving in to cravings for sushi sushi sushi and absurd candy combinations, i finally settled for healthy snacks during my workday, that i get here at choices, my new absolutely favourite bio-eco-natural-market.

it´s a cruel world, and it´s time

how nicely in the background, this indie rock, fitting in with the scenery of young urban professionals on the bus, in one hand a very special coffee-to-go, with the other hand updating their facebook-status on an ipod, rolling into downtown, looking tired and bored, not noticing the high mountains, the homeless people - not even the music on their headphones...

i got introduced to broken social scene by my vancouver hipster friends, of course. playlists up and down, the music was always there, in the apartment, on the street, in the club, effortless and easygoing. without knowing that this superband makes music, is in films and publishes books, i felt that this is art, life-art, enriching your everyday being from the background.

love it, but only the self-titled album and newer stuff, the early stuff is too baroque pop for my taste. afterall,

this was the soundtrack for my first days in vancouver and will always remind me of these times, half here, half there, half-lives everywhere. like living in a coppola movie or a coupland book.
and when emily haines and leslie feist appear from time to time - who wouldn´t fucking love that?

blue velvet cake i found here when looking for blue food. it looks gorgeous and to top that awesomeness it is even vegan. and since i live in america now and have access to strange food things, i will soon bake this pretty little thing.

i always love when i have all the colours on my plate, then i feel like my food is extra healthy and fresh - but i realized that there is lots of green, yellow, orange, red, yellow, brown and again green, but actually no or not much blue. just some purple...is it because mold is blue and it is nature´s way to keep us from eating bad food?

i know it is saturday, but this is perfect sunday music for me: warpaint from los angeles. they will play the biltmore cabaret soon, on another saturday in march, to be precise. i will be there! i wanna listen to their dreamy hazy frenzy grungy trancy sounds that expert music people call art-rock or post punk or blame on one of the girls sleeping with john frusciante. to me it is just sunday music, that means a soundtrack for many different things: waking up to rainy weather or lazy sunshine, taking a walk or even hike up a mountain, reading next to the fireplace, making love, cooking hot soup, eating ice-cream in a park, doing crafts, wasting away at the beach, talking to friends or just hanging out alone. to me, this music screams softly.
